Indiana experiencing an increase in overweight schoolchildren
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
The Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 15 percent of Indiana students were overweight, which is 3.5 percent more than two years ago.
A survey of Indiana high school students shows more should be done to encourage them to make healthier choices in terms of nutrition and physical activity, the state's health commissioner says.
The Youth Risk Behavior Survey was taken by 1,528 students from 53 Indiana high schools.
Fifteen percent of the students were overweight -- an increase of 3.5 percentage points from the same survey administered two years ago.
Of this year's respondents, 15.5 percent reported eating five fruits and vegetables daily, 16.2 percent reported drinking three or more glasses of milk daily, and 34 percent admitted they don't get enough physical activity, RTV6's Stacia Matthews reported.
"The YRBS results clearly indicate that we need to help our young people maker healthier choices," said Dr. Judith Monroe, the state's health commissioner.
The state will run an obesity prevention summit at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis on Oct. 27.
