by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Registered dietitian Dayle Hayes talks about the advantages of stretching and dance exercises and how to achieve optimal fitness with a personally tailored exercise regimen.

Optimal fitness always involves a combination of eating well and being active. This column will offer fun ideas for the first two - getting fit with dancing and stretching. Next month, I'll feature tips about easy ways to build strength in your bones and muscles. As always, you can take a significant step toward a healthier you by committing to some specific new habits. Dance is a wonderful physical activity for all ages, all seasons and all places. Do it alone or with a partner - dancing is a fun way to get fit. Country western, square, ballroom, tango, salsa, polka or swing - dancing has been a fun way to socialize since people first danced around a fire. Pick your favorite kind of music, grab a few friends and dance the night away at home or on the town. 2. Rock around the clock or tap across the stage. Rumba, Bossa Nova, Cha Cha, boogie woogie, calypso - just the names of dance steps makes you want to get up and move. Dance classes with recitals and performances aren't just kids' stuff; they're a great way for adults to get fit, too. Just pick the steps you've always wanted to learn - jazz, tap, funk, hip-hop or Latin. Turn up the radio while you clean the house, or plug in headphones while you walk. Regular stretching reduces stress, fatigue and muscle tension while improving circulation and mental alertness. Gentle stretches, like reaching up with your arms or flexing your toes back and forth are safe for most people. If you have any muscle or joint problems or a repetitive strain injury, consult your healthcare provider about the best stretches for you.
