Scientists develop formula for identifying menopause
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
At the University of Pittsburgh, scientists have tested an algorithm to determine a woman's current position in the menopause transition.
The Menopause Transition Menopause is the cessation of menstrual periods.
In the time leading up to menopause (called the perimenopause), the ovaries start making less estrogen.
The average age for natural menopause in the U.S. is 51.
Menopause can also occur suddenly after removal or destruction of the ovaries (such as after a hysterectomy).
For most women, perimenopause begins around 40.
One of the most common signs associated with fluctuating hormone levels is hot flashes.
Declining estrogen levels may also cause the lining of the vagina to become thin and dry.
Women may experience vaginal itching and burning, an increased number of vaginal infections and pain during intercourse.
With age, women lose bone faster than they can make new bone.
Fractures are most common in the hips, wrist and spine and can cause considerable pain and disability.
Researchers believe estrogen provides protection from cardiovascular disease.
When estrogen levels decline, the protection is lowered and the risk for heart attack and stroke goes up.
Knowing for certain if menopause has occurred would give many women peace of mind.
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have developed an algorithm to calculate a woman's status in the menopause transition.
The formula was developed using measurements of hormones from women taking part in another study, called the Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE).
Doctors take into account a woman's hormone measurements, reproductive history and menstrual cycle date to determine where she falls within the menopause transition.
Researchers can even use the algorithm to help determine menopause status in women who have had a hysterectomy.
Investigators say physicians could use the information to determine how soon a patient will reach menopause and make recommendations to reduce the woman's risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.
