Health Minister Odete Semedo reports more than 18,000 cases have been reported in the country since last May, and of those, 300 have proved fatal, though the death rate has gradually decreased.

LUANDA, Oct. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Guinea-Bissau Health Minister Odete Semedo has acknowledged that the cholera epidemic sweeping the African country since May remains out of control but that the mortality rate has lessened significantly, according to reports from Bissau on Thursday. Semedo told local media that an average 100 new cholera cases were being registered daily but that no fatalities had been reported in more than one week. Since the epidemic broke in Bissau last May, about 300 people have died from cholera out of more than 18,000 cases across the country.
