Missouri groups propose amendment to protect stem cell research

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Stem cell coalition chairman Donn Rubin heads a union of patient groups and researchers who want to protect certain types of stem cell research currently under fire from Missouri pro-lifers.

Jefferson City, MO - (AHN) A constitutional amendment is being proposed by a coalition of researchers and patient groups to protect stem cell research in Missouri. Pro-life activists in the state have tried to outlaw a particular type of research they insists amounts to murder. Amendment supporters must gather at least 139,181 signatures from registered voters to get the measure on the November 2006 ballot. Stem cell coalition chairman Donn Rubin says critics want to "criminalize some of the most promising types of stem cell research." The coalition says its proposal is the first in the nation to protect patients' rights to be treated with any eventual stem cell-related cures. It would specify that stem cell research, therapies and cures allowed under federal law also are permitted in Missouri.
