PruHealth tracks the rise in medical insurance premiums

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

PruHealth has released research that states private medical insurance premiums have risen 37 percent since 1999.

Research from the private medical insurer PruHealth shows that the average private medical insurance (PMI) premium has risen by 37% since 1999. That compares with Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation of just 12% during the same period. Shaun Matisonn, Chief Executive of PruHealth, says that the huge increase in premiums is totally unsustainable and urgent action is needed if the recent downward trend in policyholder numbers is to be reversed. The report shows that those people who make efforts to improve their health and wellbeing can earn themselves significant premium reductions from PruHealth's policies in subsequent years. Even those usually discriminated against, such as people in their sixties and above, are claimed to be able to reduce their premiums, without compromising their quality of cover. The average saving for PruHealth's first batch of individual renewals has been 14%, with more than 90% of individual policyholders seeing a premium reduction on renewal. Shaun Matisonn said, "Consumers have been calling for innovation and for an end to spiralling premiums coupled with reductions in the quality of cover. People who make more effort to look after their health make fewer claims. So, why not give policyholders incentives to manage their health more effectively and then reward them with lower premiums when they do? This approach reduces both the insurer's risk and the cost of cover at the same time, without affecting the quality."
