Osteoporosis on the rise in India

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The Arthritis Foundation of India estimates a 200 percent increase in osteoporosis cases in the last decade.

Osteoporosis is a disease of epidemic proportion and over 50 per cent of women are susceptible to fractures due to osteoporosis in a lifetime. She was just 41 when Pooja Sharma, who works with a Delhi based medical magazine, realised she had osteoporosis. Also known as the bone thinning disease, Pooja discovered this accidentally when she fractured her leg. "Post fracture, I limped for nearly a year and then I suffered from so much pain in my foot, I could not walk and do my daily chores. I put on weight and as a result of that I developed back problems. There was a lot of pressure on my back, which has become chronic now. For the last 3-4 years, I am unable to walk smoothly," she says. The Arthritis Foundation of India says there has been an estimated 200 per cent jump in osteoporosis cases across Asia in the last 10 years. And today, around 10 crore Indians suffer from this silent disease with no major symptoms. Every third Indian woman has osteoporosis and the profile of these patients is rapidly changing. "There has been a definite increase in osteoporosis among young people. Youngsters follow a diet pattern which is not conducive to good bone mass. One attains peak bone mass by the age of 25," says Dr Talwar, Member, Delhi Osteoporosis Foundation. Poor eating habits, excessive dieting, lack of regular exercise and deficiency of vitamin D and calcium are all causes of the disease. However, osteoporosis can be prevented if detected at an early stage and a Bone Densitometry Test can help diagnose it early.
