Doctor frowns upon stomach surgeries as a weight loss option
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Dr. Boyd Lyles, Medical Director of L.A. Weight Loss Centers, Inc., discusses the dangerous aspects of weight loss surgeries like stomach stapling and compares these drawbacks to the benefits of weight loss induced through lifestyle changes, namely exercise and diet.
The survivors can expect months of difficult recovery, common complications such as vomiting, ulcers, hernias, and internal bleeding, and the surgery's dirty little secret---the cruel irony of a nightmarishly strict diet for the rest of their lives.
Most patients are restricted from eating certain foods ever again (which vary depending on the person).
In addition, patients are often required to take a variety of supplements and medications to combat 'predictive malabsorption,' a serious side-effect that stops the body from digesting crucial nutrients.
After gastric bypass, naughty indulgences that contain excess fats and sugars can become life-threatening transgressions because they take up crucial stomach space but have no nutritional value.
Sadly, many of these patients could lose their extra weight without surgery, given a well-designed fitness program that includes diet, exercise, and proven behavior modification techniques.
In over twenty years of treating obesity, I've rarely recommended bariatric surgery, and when I have, it has only been in the very most extreme cases and with great trepidation.
[Editors note: Dr. Lyle originally posted this as a comment to an earlier story, "Bariatric surgery a human right in Columbia," concerned that CalorieLab Calorie Counter News appeared to be endorsing bariatric surgery. That was not our intention, and we certainly would not recommend surgery for someone who is only 266 pounds, as Maradona was. That CalorieLab's two most important services are a food calorie counter and an exercise calories burned calculator demonstrates that we believe in less food and more exercise as the core of any weight loss program. L.A. Weight Loss Centers, with which Dr. Lyle is associated, is a successful weight loss company focusing on calorie restriction with many satisfied customers, although some critics have accused it of overly aggressive sales tactics for its programs and its bars and supplements.]
