Human cloning ban will be vetoed by Wisconsin governor

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle plans to veto a human cloning ban passed in the state legislature in order to protect embryonic cell research being conducted at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
Jim Doyle said he'll veto a ban on human cloning.
The measure would prevent both reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning, which aims to treat medical problems by creating embryos for stem-cell research, reported WISC-TV in Madison.
The government contends the ban would hamper the search for disease cures and harm embryonic stem-cell research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
School chancellor John Wiley said the legislature's action sends a "frightening" message that "special interests can close off legitimate avenues of scientific inquiry."
The anti-abortion group Wisconsin Right-To-Life said it plans a call-in campaign to persuade the governor to sign the ban.
"We want good Wisconsin right-to-life research, but we want it to be ethical research, and there's lots of good ethical research being done," said Susan Armacost, legislative director of Wisconsin Right to Life.
"Human cloning and killing human clones is not the answer."
One of the bill's authors said the legislation wouldn't affect current adult stem-cell research or umbilical cord blood research.
Given the vote margin in the Senate, an override of Doyle's veto looks unlikely.
Six other states have enacted similar bans on cloning: Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota and South Dakota.
