Researchers claim six to eight glasses of water a day can help fight off migraines

People who suffer from migraines are often debilitated by the pain, but The Daily Mail reports that scientists at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands have found drinking six to eight glasses of water a day can help lessen the severity and frequency of migraines by battling dehydration.
"Water seemed to have a considerable effect on the total number of hours of headache and headache intensity," said Dr Mark Spigt from the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands.
Dehydration has long been associated with headaches, but few studies have been done.
The researchers recruited 14 female migraine sufferers and four males, with an average age of 44.
Half were told to drink 1.5litres of water daily, in addition to usual fluid intake.
The rest were given a dummy pill.
The water group managed to consume just one litre a day, but still reported an improvement.
Professor Peter Goadsby from the Institute of Neurology in London, said:"This study is in line with current thinking that physiological disturbance, such as dehydration, hunger or disturbed sleep patterns can trigger migraine and should be avoided."
