Diabetes is underdiagnosed, according to audit in England

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

A large-scale clinical audit on diabetes care in England shows diabetes may be underdiagnosed by as much as 25 percent and that nearly half of all women who have diabetes are unaware of it.

The early findings from a massive clinical audit on diabetes care in England also suggest that almost one in two women with diabetes may not know it. The report came after figures earlier this month revealed that the number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK has broken the two million mark. The audit, using information about 250,000 patients, is being carried out by the Health and Social Care Information Centre on behalf of the Healthcare Commission. The audit estimated that the extent of undiagnosed diabetes could mean that a quarter of all those with the condition have not been identified, including almost half of women sufferers. It also found that less than half of people diagnosed with diabetes were receiving eye examinations - putting them at risk of blindness. And only 56 per cent of diabetics were managing their glucose levels within the guidelines set by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. The Healthcare Commission said it was vital the public knew about the risks.
