Get enough vitamin D for bone health

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Women need more vitamin D, which aids in the body's absorption of calcium, for healthy bones.

Karen Winterhalter, executive director of WHC, said the research was "very worrying". She said: "Bone fractures take a terrible toll, especially after the menopause, and many could be prevented with lifestyle measures and proper treatment. Most people already know that calcium is important to protect their bones but fewer are aware of vitamin D's contribution to bone health. "We want to make women aware of osteoporosis, let them know about the benefits of vitamin D and encourage them to make sure they are getting enough." Vitamin D and calcium supplements are a central part of the treatment for osteoporosis. Vitamin D helps make sure the body can absorb calcium from the intestine, but unlike calcium it is not readily available in the diet. WHC said that to get the required daily amount of vitamin D from diet alone, an adult would have to eat nine eggs or drink 30 litres of milk. It is often called the "sunshine vitamin" because exposure to sunlight is the most important source. But as people get older their body's ability to convert sunlight into vitamin D decreases.
