British schools expected to restrict supply of fatty foods to once a week

Labour, the political party currently in power in Great Britain, is expected to announce whether potato chips, soda and candy will be banned from school menus later this month, the Sunday Times reports, and nutritional standards that limit the availability of junk food to once a week are expected to be adopted.
School children will only be able to eat fatty food once a week under new government health plans, according to press reports.
Ruth Kelly, education secretary, is set to disclose the new nutritional standards at the Labour party conference this month, with crisps, fizzy drinks and sweets facing a ban from school menus, the Sunday Times claimed.
The School Meals Review Panel set up by Ms Kelly agreed the new focus in the wake of a campaign by Jamie Oliver, the popular TV chef.
The new nutritional standards have been developed by the Caroline Walker Trust, a public health campaign group working for better quality food.
Schools could be obliged to adopt more healthy menus this year to offer children a more balanced diet and a greater array of different foods.
Fast food such as hamburger and chips and sweets with more than ten per cent of fat could be placed on a "blacklist", preventing them being regular choices for school kids.
One radical plan could be to end canteen-style restaurants used in many secondary schools where children "pick and mix" to avoid healthy foods.
With obesity among young children on the rise, more stringent menus focusing on a balanced diet are necessary, Ms Kelly is expected to tell the conference.
