Researchers in Dublin claim that mental stimulations like crossword puzzles and number games can decrease the risk of brain dysfunction later in life.

Dublin researchers say mental stimulation such as crosswords or number puzzles can ward off the decline in brain function of over-65s. Volunteers who did 10 hours of training sessions in problem solving and memory techniques showed brain-power equivalent to people up to 14 years younger. Trinity College neuroscience professor Ian Robertson said research showed cognitive exercise was as important as physical exertion to ward off mental old age. "Our bodies are all getting healthier and we are living longer and the biggest threat to being able to enjoy that is the functioning of our brains," he said.
