Lack of sleep can drain your health

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Many Americans, especially women, are not getting the recommended eight hours or more of sleep a night, and because lack of sleep means loss of energy and motivation, people who do not get enough sleep also struggle to maintain healthy exercise and nutritional habits.

With all of these responsibilities, and roles, she says she only gets six and a half hours of sleep each night, and it's always broken. "I hardly ever get a consistent six and a half hours." And if six and a half hours is the average amount of sleep she gets a night, this year alone, she will be deprived of 546 hours of sleep. The busy saleswoman says "I work in the field and I eat out a lot. As for exercise -- she counts on racing from client meeting to client meeting as her means of exercise, as at-home hours are reserved for spending time with her children, paying bills or finishing out her work day. And while her diet and exercise plans are both suffering, sleep, the thing that Cathy thinks is most important to her overall wellness, is the thing she gets the least of. More than one-fourth of American women noted that while a good night's sleep is the most essential component to one's sense of well-being, only 16 percent reported that they are more likely to catch much needed shut-eye as a means of improving personal wellness. Rather, 26 percent are more likely to exercise for 30 minutes a day, and 22 percent eat a more balanced diet in order to boost their overall wellness. But how can women, some of whom work hectic nine-to-fives (and sometimes beyond), then come home to take care of their families, sacrifice on sleep? And how does sacrificing sleep for exercise or diet affect overall wellness? And more importantly, in a society in which increased work and family demands pull and tug -- can women achieve the synergistic effects of sleep, diet and exercise? Or is that expecting too much of life?
