Man walks 380 miles to raise money for diabetes

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Richard Humphreys, from Kirkwood, Pennsylvania hopes to raise $100,000 for Camp Ho Mita Koda, a camp for diabetic children.

By now, Richard Humphreys of Kirkwood is most likely walking alongside a main highway in Pennsylvania with his walking stick in one hand, carrying a tent, sleeping bag, food and some clothes weighing 20 pounds on a pack strapped to his back. The 62-year-old father of three who is a diabetic, is embarking on a physical and psychological challenge by walking 380 miles on a month-long trip from Camp Ho Mita Koda, a camp for children with diabetes in Newbury, Ohio, to his home on Bridle Path Road. "It will be a life-altering experience," said Humphreys, who planned to do the walk four years ago to benefit the camp in Ohio and the one he was starting on his 15-acre property, which never came to fruition. Although he said there are many uncertainties for him walking a long distance, such as the pain he's been experiencing in his knee and his blood sugar getting low because of the excessive exercise, Humphreys said he's excited about the walk. "I'm just really curious about this day after day after day physical challenge," said Humphreys, who plans to walk a total of 15 miles a day at 3 miles an hour for about six or seven hours a day. He will be calling the camp daily to let them know where he is and eating at restaurants and stocking up on food at grocery stores. One of the towns he will be walking through is his hometown, Curwensville. He planned to spend his first night in Mesopotamia. Bob Bender of Black Rock Retreat has also offered to walk with him, along with Bill Danz, a 55-year-old diabetic from New Providence. "I'm very fortunate to have met Dick," said Danz.
