Eating "a rainbow" of multicolored fruits and vegetables can prevent stroke

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Given the fact that most children and adults do not eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, a new stroke prevention campaign in the UK is aimed at encouraging the consumption of a rainbow of different fruits and vegetables.

Stroke Awareness Week aims to promote the benefits of eating a range of different coloured fruits and vegetables, particularly to children. Most strokes occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood to the brain. Stroke is the third biggest killer in England and Wales and has a greater disability impact than any other condition. Studies show that eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day can reduce the risk of a stroke by a third. Yet, people in the UK only eat an average of just over three portions a day, and in a typical week, one in five children eat no fruit at all. The theme of this year's Stroke Awareness campaign will build on the government's 'Five a Day' campaign which highlights the benefits of eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day as well as their 'Food in Schools' programme which aims to bring healthier food to the nation's schools. The Stroke Association have also produced an interactive guide, containing ideas and information, to help show how easy stroke prevention can be. The Stroke Association has listed 'Ten Easy Steps Towards Stroke Prevention' that detail the simple ways you can improve your diet and prevent a stroke. Five A Day One of the fundamentals of healthy eating is to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, a portion being equal to one piece of fruit or one slice of a big fruit, like melon, or between 1/2 and 1 cup of fruit and vegetables. Halt The Salt Currently the average intake of salt is almost double the recommended 6 grams of salt for an adult per day, 1-6g for children.
