Patient's own marrow could be best treatment for heart disease

A 61-year-old heart attack patient who recovered after being injected with his own bone marrow suggests a person's own marrow could be used as an effective heart disease treatment.

The dramatic recovery of a 61-year-old heart attack patient who was injected with his own bone marrow could prove to be a breakthrough in heart-disease treatment, a team of doctors at Saitama Medical School said Saturday. Because of his age and history of heart trouble, the gravely ill man was deemed ineligible for a heart transplant. But after the bone marrow treatment, the patient improved to the extent that he no longer needs a heart pump and is now able to walk on his own. Using regenerated cells to recover the use of blood vessels and muscles in heart disease treatments is an emerging field in Japan. Satoshi Gojo, the doctor directly involved in the patient's care, said, ``Although we have not yet reached the stage of treating heart patients with only cell transplants, we can expect to save patients who would not have survived if we combine this method with conventional treatments such as medication and heart pumps.'' The hospital's ethics committee approved transplant of the patient's bone marrow, and he underwent the university's first such transplant May 18, the doctors said. The fluid included bone marrow stem cells capable of regenerating into a variety of cells, and therefore expected to help recover the patient's blood vessels and heart muscle. The fluid was concentrated into 50 ml to boost the concentration of certain white blood cells and stem cells, and it was then fed into the patient's heart through the artificial vessel used in his bypass surgery. The use of patients' own cells in treating heart disease has been reported overseas. Although different approaches have been used, about 60 patients in Germany received transplants of their own cells and the safety and effectiveness of the treatment have been confirmed, experts said.
