Smoothies are a healthy, cool summer treat
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Refreshing and nutritious, fruit smoothies are a cool and healthy way to cool off in the summer.
As we look for ways to cool off during the hot summer, smoothies might be the perfect solution.
Smoothies are basically a blended fruit drink, which first gained popularity in California, and are often consumed as breakfast, lunch or a snack.
They are low in fat and calories and packed with vitamin C and antioxidants.
They provide fiber and count as one or two fruit servings, which is often lacking in American diets.
Although you can find recipes for smoothies, they are generally made from whatever fruit is in season.
Most smoothies start out with a base of liquid, such as milk, fruit juice or even apple juice.
Recipes usually include a balance of tart and sweet fruit, plus fiber-rich bananas, mangoes, pineapple and water fruits, such as strawberries, kiwi and oranges.
Fruit can either be fresh or frozen, while frozen usually yields a frostier drink.
If you freeze large fruits, such as bananas and melons, chop the fruit into pieces first.
Add yogurt, milk or soy milk for creaminess and calcium.
Ice cubes add extra chill, but you need a blender that's strong enough to crush the ice, or substitute ice cubes with crushed ice.
Extra flavoring can be added, such as grated, fresh root ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg or vanilla extract.
For extra nutrition, you can add wheat germ, protein powder or brewer's yeast, although these items may alter the overall flavor of the smoothie.
I haven't tried this recipe -- but I know many of you like recipes with "mystery ingredients," and it comes from a reputable source.
Drain the liquid from the can of navy beans.
