Three South Dakota schools awarded for health programs
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Each school received $5, 000 and a banner in recognition of their health education practices, which include encouraging physical exercise and proper nutrition.
Three South Dakota schools and one school district have been singled out in the governor's Healthy Schools program.
They'll each get $5,000 and a banner.
The winners are Lake Preston Elementary, Madison Middle School, Madison High School, and the Watertown School District.
The program honors schools that encourage physical exercise, nutritious foods and other healthy lifestyles.
# The Wall School Board has voted to remove caffeinated beverages from the student vending machines in its new school.
Superintendent Ed Wegner says he's been waiting 35 years to do this, and the benefits to student health will outweigh any lost revenue.
School board president Marty Huether says caffeinated products will be sold in the staff lounge vending machine and from concession stands at after-school events.
Parent Pam Johnson says the idea is great, as kids don't need extra sugar and caffeine during the day.
But 16-year-old student Muriel Kjerstad calls the idea "stupid", saying people will bring their own if you try to stop it.
School officials say they don't plan to monitor the beverages that students bring into the school, but students will not be allowed to take pop into their classrooms.
