Pennsylvania reports alarmingly high risk of childhood obesity

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Clarion County in Pennsylvania will place new emphasis on early childhood intervention and education into nutrition.

According to statistics from the Department of Health, childhood obesity rates in Clarion County indicate that Clarion County may have up to three times higher the state rate for children considered obese or at risk for obesity. "Studies also show the earlier the intervention, the less prevention there is to change the health problem that exists," said Nancy Falvo, executive director at Clarion University 's Health Science Education Center. To address this issue, Falvo met with Nancy Sayre, director of the Earl R. Siler Children's Learning Complex on the campus of Clarion University, about forming a partnership between the Siler Center and HSEC. Both agreed a partnership between the two entities seemed like a perfect fit. "It was an easy connection to make," said Sayre. Ron Radaker, HSEC associate director, worked together with Reece Wilson and Sayre to develop ideas for the program. Educators will work with children on their senses -- taking everything in, and getting ready for school. Around sixth grade level -- a consistent steady message across the curriculum, fitness, senses, healthy decision, impact when these children are in third, fourth and sixth grades. In addition to being licensed by the Department of Welfare, the center also is accredited through the National Association for the Young Child. Dr. Nancy Sayre designed, planned and executed the renovations to the Ralston Hall space. The Child Care Center operated alone for six months while renovations were completed on additional Ralston Hall space. The program has been licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare since 1990, and has been accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, a division of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
