Parents must focus on infants' emotional development

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Emotional development plays an important part in the health and well-being of infants.

There are all sorts of professionals whose life's work is devoted to the well-being of babies. In these cases pediatric therapists are called in to provide occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech or cognitive therapy. All of these professionals, in conjunction with the family, are focused on the healthy development of the baby. Based on research in the area of brain development, we are learning that it is possible to prevent and treat mental health problems in very young children. The World Association for Infant Mental Health is an interdisciplinary and international association that promotes education, research, and study of the effects of mental, emotional, and social development during infancy on later development. What we as professionals, parents and the community can do to help give them the best opportunities for present well-being and future development. Babies need consistent, warm and responsive care in order to learn to form healthy relationships, a basis for mental health. According to mental health professionals, three factors contribute to this relationship: the baby, the primary parent/primary caregiver, and the "fit" between the two. Many factors can disrupt the healthy interaction between a baby and its primary caregiver. For example, if a baby has a disability that makes him irritable or difficult to hold, it may be difficult for the parent to bond. If a parent or caregiver is depressed or otherwise unable to give the infant much time, this can also affect bonding. Parents or caregivers who have concerns about infant attachments can contact their health care provider for more information and care-giving strategies.
