Staff at a Michigan elementary school state the importance of early education in nutrition and healthy choices.
These are just a few of the things students at Lincoln Elementary enjoy when it comes to eating lunch.
Robin Wilkerson's job as head cook at Lincoln Elementary is to prepare each day's meals for the students.
On Monday, the kitchen and lunchroom were again alive with activity as students returned for the first day of school.
One thing the school and Wilkerson try to offer is healthy choices.
That means vending machines with candy and pop are not in the school and it also means serving things such as fruits and vegetables with every entree.
Assistant Food Services director Shellie McGowan said the healthy choices are not only offered in the lunchroom but in the classroom as well.
To help teach students about the importance of eating healthy, Lincoln, as well as the other elementaries within the district, uses Pyramid Pete.
During the class, McGowan or another staff member will talk to students about the food groups and healthy choices.
Although the first day of school may not always be the best day in all the students' lives, registered dietician Julie Miller said getting back on a schedule, especially an eating schedule, is a good thing.
"When kids go back to school, they get back to a better schedule with eating and are not eating ab lib.
Miller said children model after their parents so if they eat healthy, most likely their children will too.
Just like when buying food at the grocery store, people have to make healthy choices when getting fast food too.
If a parent is concerned about their child's weight, Miller said it is best to talk to a doctor and if the child has to go on a diet, the entire family should change their eating habits as well.
