Yoga proves to be good for the body

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Follow these simple steps to bring yoga and relaxation into your life.

Everyone, from the most flexible expert to the stiffest beginner, regardless of age, can benefit from a yoga holiday - and not necessarily in the way you might imagine. Yes, the twisting, pulling, bending and stretching are an excellent way of toning up the body. In essence, all yoga classes are about the same thing - moving your body into postures, allowing the breath and energy to flow, leaving you more relaxed and calm. For example, Sivananda yoga involves an holistic 12-posture class with chanting, meditation and breathing exercises, suitable for all levels including beginners. This, too, is suitable for novices, but only if you start from scratch at a beginners' class: you need to learn the sequences, and at an advanced level these veer towards extreme sport. Find a teacher you like and you will probably discover they run a yoga holiday. You will be amazed at the progress a few days' practising will bring. Costs vary widely - anything from a couple of hundred pounds for a few days at a Sivananda retreat in Dorset to 1,850 for a week of treatments and activities at a luxury location abroad. It was July 1998 and I was on a hotel rooftop taking in the sunset, silhouetted palms, jangling temples and urban thrum of Mysore, India, during a month-long yoga holiday. Years later, I arrived in Colombo and sat jet-lagged and wide-eyed as our Jeep snaked past the dawn beachfront and deep into the heart of Sri Lanka's jungled hills. And then we arrived at Ulpotha and the lush, ecological, electricity-free community that would be my home for two weeks. I went for cooling swims in the lotus lake; I sought refuge in the Aryuvedic cupboard sitting on a wicker grill over special smoking herbs; I took homeopathy.
