Comfort eating is on the rise in Britain

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

New British research has shown that women and teenagers with troubling love lives are turning to comfort foods in higher amounts.

We've all had those bad days when only a family bar of Dairy Milk will do, but this week worrying new figures show that comfort eating is on the rise again amongst teens and young women ... This information comes after The Priory Group, which treats people with eating disorders, questioned 1,000 people and found that people aged between 15-24 years had the worst relationship with food. These worrying facts reveal that teenagers and young adults are increasingly turning to food as a way of filling an emotional void. Ok, so the majority of us may tuck into a big slab of chocolate when we are feeling low, but experts warn that comfort from eating may become a dependence on food to temporarily make us feel better. Many young adults have issues such as low self-esteem and a lack of confidence, especially when it comes to sensitive issues such as weight or relationships. "It can become a vicious circle," says Frankie Phillips, a registered dietician with the British Dietician Association "There's no harm with having the odd biscuit when we're feeling low, but if you feel the need to eat the whole packet or if you start eating unhealthy food regularly as a way of compensating for feeling down, comfort eating can become a problem. It doesn't take a dietitian to work out that eating too much of these stodgy foods is not good for your health or your waistline, and what with 63% of adults revealing that they feel unattractive when they are overweight, excessive eating can cause further damage to an already fragile self-esteem problem. When people start to use food as a way of controlling emotion, dangerous eating disorders can develop, adding to physical and mental stress.
