Scientists in Oregon recently said they have discovered the key in what inhibits the brain from healing, ScienceDaily.com reports.

Researchers say they've identified factors inhibiting the brain's self-healing process, posing insights into preventing brain damage in premature babies. Premature babies have more health problems (July 20, 2005) -- Recent research suggests children born prematurely at weights of 2.2 pounds or less during the 1990s have high rates of mental and physical ... Pomegranate juice may reduce birth defect (June 28, 2005) -- A U.S. study finds that drinking pomegranate juice may reduce the severity of some brain injuries associated with premature births. Study: Staff separate moms, newborns (June 9, 2005) -- A Swedish study finds that many new mothers left their babies in the nursery because they believe that is what hospital staff want them to do. Lead researcher Dr. Stephen Back of the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine-Portland and colleagues identified some of the key factors that prevent brain damage repair in premature babies and patients with multiple sclerosis or certain other neurological diseases. Back, an associate professor of pediatrics and neurology, said the findings offer important clues about why the nervous systems fails to repair itself and suggest some forms of brain damage could be reversed. Prematurity is the leading killer of U.S. newborns and has increased 29 percent since 1981.
