New York company helps reduce Alzheimer's progression
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
A Williamsville, NY company has taken their program national in the hopes that their success in stemming the progression of Alzheimer's can be achieved on a national level.
People with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia problems seem to show memory improvement and slowed disease progression after participating in a program developed by a Williamsville company.
The program appears to be promising - so promising that it went national before it could be fully implemented in Western New York by Homewatch CareGivers, a companion service for the elderly.
Over 12 weeks' time, they use flash cards, hands of a clock and other tools to help the brain remember.
Home-care services usually train personnel in how to care for and be sensitive to mentally impaired clients, but this program might be the first to personally engage clients, said Linda Sabo, executive director of the Alzheimer's Association chapter in Western New York, where 50,000 people are living with the disease.
During a two-month pilot in Buffalo earlier this year, clients in the Pathways to Memory program showed a 20-percent to 40-percent improvement in memory, which betters their chances of remaining in their homes for a longer stretch.
That's what caught the attention of Paul Sauer, president of Homewatch CareGivers International.
"Our mission is to keep them in their own homes rather than assisted-living centers or nursing homes.
A former nursing-care administrator and Alzheimer's Association director, Gillick said in-home programs for Alzheimer's patients have been lacking in the industry.
He and his director of program development, Ann Marie Doetterl, a 15-year veteran of Alzheimer's program administration, began working on the Pathways to Memory program last fall.
He and Doetterl presented the Pathways to Memory program at an April gathering of 20 Homewatch CareGivers franchises, and 15 signed letters of intent by the meeting's end.
Franchises will pay a credentialing fee and an annual subscription fee, and have to be recredentialed every three years.
