Healthy nut oil hits store shelves

A new, healthier cooking oil made from nuts is becoming readily available in supermarkets everywhere.
We've been hearing about the health benefits of nuts in daily diets, and now nut oils are more widely available.
A new artisan-style nut oil is just hitting area stores.
La Tourangelle oil in walnut, hazelnut and almond varieties is available at Whole Foods Markets and Williams Sonoma stores.
The oils can be used to finish off dishes, in salad dressings, sauces and marinades, or for meat, vegetables and pasta dishes.
Olive oil contains 13.5% saturated fat, while the walnut oil has just 9.1%.
It also comes out on top in omega-3 fatty acids, with 1 tablespoon meeting the recommended daily intake.
The company also makes grapeseed oil, which is cooking oil that contains omega-6 fatty acids and has a higher smoke point than any commonly used oil.
Prices vary, but a 16.9-ounce tin can of roasted walnut oil is $7.99 and one of grapeseed oil is $6.99 at Whole Foods Market in Ann Arbor.
