Eat healthy foods to avoid cancer

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

New research has found that a diet rich in fruits, green leafy veggies and whole grains can greatly reduce your risk for developing cancer.

It's official -- nearly three-quarters of all cancer cases could be prevented by a largely plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and a few simple lifestyle changes. Seattle's Dr. John Potter chaired its panel of experts, who analyzed the studies that have been done worldwide on diet and cancer prevention -- about 4,500 separate pieces of research. Potter and the 14 panel members, who included well-known Dr. Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health, came to the dramatic conclusion that up to 70 per cent of cancers could be prevented if people not only adopted a predominantly plant-based diet, but also stopped smoking, drank less alcohol and got more exercise. "Just to make a parallel observation, we know that if everybody stopped smoking today, there would still be a lot of lung cancer because of the debt that's been built up, so to speak," he said. Some dietary effects probably cut in fairly soon, but there's a strong suspicion -- backed up by the evidence -- that, for instance, breast cancer may be influenced by rate of growth in childhood. The 670-page report of the Diet and Cancer Project, called Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective, was released last year. "In the past, we always said, 'Don't eat fat,' when we talked about diet and cancer prevention. Scientists and dietitians are talking more and more about phytochemicals. Panel members found that diets high in whole-grain cereals possibly decrease the risk of stomach cancer. The researchers concluded that alcohol probably increases the risk of colo-rectal cancer, and probably also risk of breast cancer -- even at very low levels of consumption. 9. Eat less salt and fewer salted foods.
