Take a beach holiday to improve your health
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Improving your health can be as simple as going to the beach, as swimming is good for your heart and sea water is good for your skin.
Whether it's a fortnight in St Tropez or a day-trip to Bognor, a sojourn by the beach will leave you feeling fit and refreshed.
"No matter which stroke you do, a dip in the sea is great exercise, because it works every muscle in the body, while helping you maintain a low core temperature and putting little strain on your heart," says personal trainer Matt Roberts.
Water sports can help you tone up, too.
"Water-skiing works the arms surprisingly hard, as well as the back, shoulder and abdominal muscles," says Roberts.
"The sea helps to firm and tone the skin.
If there is plenty of seaweed in the ocean, this is especially beneficial, as its extracts help to break down fat cells and reduce cellulite.
"It dries out the skin and the salt is a natural exfoliant, so it can help to prevent outbreaks," explains Hatzistefanis, who spends every summer on the beaches of Mykonos, where she grew up.
"The sea is a very rich source of silicon," says Beata O'Donoghue of Spa Health Specialists.
If you don't have time for a pedicure before you hit the beach, simply wiggle your toes in the sand.
Mix some sand with your sun cream for a great exfoliating body scrub that is not too abrasive."
The ultraviolet rays stimulate the production of vitamin D, which enables our bodies to make good use of phosphorus and calcium, promoting strong bones and cell division.
"A stroll along the edge of the ocean, where the waves break, can be enormously revitalising," says O'Donoghue.
"Spending time on the beach evokes childhood memories of playing in the ocean and building sand castles - tapping into your playful, imaginative side," says Lynda Field, author of Instant Life Coach (Vermilion, 4.99).
