Teens can get fit with the help of personal trainers

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

It is never too early to teach proper fitness to your pre-teen or teenager, and this can be accomplished with the help of a personal trainer.

That's only a half-joke to the 60 or more regular clients who come here two to three times a week --- not for miracles but for real results. Many have been with owner and personal trainer Steve "Doc" Marks for years. Tiffany Ferguson, personal trainer and group fitness coordinator at the Asheville Racquet Club featuring Vision Sports, works with men and women who vary in age from early 20s to late 70s. "They think they are going to be coming into the gym and working out with only younger people," she said. The Racquet Club offers two free 30-minute sessions with a personal trainer who can explain proper form, breathing techniques and how to use the equipment. She adds that if you can't afford a personal trainer, find a workout buddy who will help keep you motivated. Costs for a personal trainer can vary from $35 to $75 per hour for individual sessions. At Benchmark Fitness, Marks offers a free first session for clients to get a feel for the gym and know what to expect during training. Litzenberger's husband, an Asheville physician also in his 50s, is also a client. Some older clients, like Sandy Ochsenreiter, Asheville art gallery owner, are dismayed by how much weight they gain through the years. With 30-plus years of experience in the field of strength training, Marks holds numerous certifications, including one from the American College of Sports Medicine, and has served as both a judge and competitor in state and national bodybuilding competitions. "People spend decades getting their bodies into the mess they see in the mirror, yet they want their youth and vigor back in weeks," Marks said. Another misunderstanding is that getting into shape in middle age is not worth the effort.
