Menopause is not the awful malady many think it is

Menopause symptoms can seem bad, but they can be avoided using simple techniques and strategies.

With shows like Desperate Housewives, sexy older women are becoming more visible on TV these days. But for most women, getting older isn't about being hot. Trouble concentrating and osteoporosis are just a few of the physical issues that can plague women as they age. When she hit menopause, she began having trouble focusing and sleeping. "I was experiencing hot flashes probably three or four times an hour," she told us. "I only experience hot flashes now, probably three or four times a day," said Joan. According to a study conducted by the North American Menopause Society, about 75 percent of older women experience hot flashes. The physiological causes are not known, but the study found that low physical exercise is one factor associated with how often they occur and how severe they are. "I think what we've seen in the research is that starting to exercise or maintaining exercise from when we are younger provides benefits," said Dr. Bushman. Menopausal women also lose bone density and muscle mass, so they should focus on flexibility, strength training, and cardio-respiratory work. "If any one of the legs is missing, the stool is unstable." It's important to remember that exercise is almost like medicine taken to counteract the gradual decline of our bodies. "Once we reach adulthood, we lose about five to seven pounds of muscle mass a decade," said Dr. Bushman. "The declines in strength from the ages of 50 to 70 are about 30 percent." And of course, getting active can have enormous benefits. It has just been a huge difference for me," said Joan. "And I'm glad that I made that decision and that's the route that I decided to take."
