Finnish scientists work to make gene therapy safer

Ark Therapeutics has developed a new gene therapy delivery technology, making gene therapy safer.
Specialist healthcare group Ark Therapeutics has discovered a new targeted gene therapy delivery technology that avoids the harmful consequences of a therapeutic gene being inserted in the wrong place.
The group's Finnish scientists can now insert DNA into the specific therapeutic site in the genome, said Ark, which could greatly improve the predictability and safety of gene therapy.
Consultant director of molecular medicine in Finland professor Seppo Yla-Herttuala said, "This is potentially a highly significant step forward in gene therapy, enabling us to deliver therapeutic DNA precisely in a way that it will provide the medical benefit."
"Gene therapy has always offered the possibility of great therapeutic benefit but has been hampered by the difficulty of inserting the beneficial gene in the right place."
"Whilst we have further work to do, the ability potentially to overcome this problem is a vital breakthrough, improving the overall efficiency and safety in an area of medicine that we expect to become increasingly important in the near future," he concluded.
