Farmers being praised for attempting to reduce pollution

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Farmers have taken measures to be more friendly to the environment, new research shows, which gardered praise from Spotlight on Business.

The Environment Agency's report, Spotlight on Business, has highlighted the way farmers and growers are taking active measures to reduce pollution. According to the report 70% of farmers are taking measures to reduce pollution of rivers and groundwater, 80% of arable land is now sprayed by operators that undertake continuous professional development, under the National Register of Sprayer Operators and the number of serious pollution incidents caused by farming businesses is in overall decline. NFU deputy president Peter Kendall said: "This report is very encouraging. "Farmers and growers should be praised for their continuing good record and the work they have done and are doing to protect the environment. "Of course, more can be done to lessen the environmental impacts of farming and as part of the NFU's Making Green Ground campaign, which aims to address the environmental challenges facing sustainable agriculture, we want to continue to work with the Environment Agency and others to build on these improvements. "It is also encouraging that the EA has demonstrated a willingness to clamp down on illegal waste disposal such as fly- tipping. "This practice is not only frustrating for farmers, growers and the public alike, it also undermines farmers' environmental performance and has significant cost implications for us all."
