Inspectors have found a large oil lake in Russia covering more than 11 acres.

Inspectors from the environment protection department of North Russia's Kirovsk region have discovered a lake of fuel oil whose surface covers 4.5 hectares, or over 11 aceres, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported on Thursday. The agency quoted the press service of the Russian Nature Ministry as saying that the "unique man-made object" was described as a "fuel oil lake" on military maps. The lake started appearing back in the 1970s when military fuel oil storage units and oil pipelines started leaking into a small lake near a military base, eventually filling it completely with fuel oil. Today, the surface of the oil lake amounts to 45,000 square meters, its volume is reported at about 20,000 cubic meters and it stores about 18,000 tons of fuel oil. The lake is so big it can be included in the Guinness book of records, the inspectors said. The inspectors also said they were planning to sue the commanders of the base for the damage caused to the environment.
