Mosquito season arrives again

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

During hot summer evenings many people like to sit outside and enjoy the weather, but mosquitoes can make that difficult. There are many things you can do to keep yourself safe, like wearing long-sleeved shirts and socks.

There are barbecues to give, gardens to be planted and camping to be done. And there's usually one uninvited guest that manages to make it to most outdoor outings: the mosquito. In summers past, it was almost a game to count who had the most mosquito bites after an outdoor event. But ever since the West Nile Virus began to spread, mosquito bites are anything but a game. Avoiding bites is all about prevention, both personal and around the home. Personal protection starts by knowing how to make yourself "invisible" to bugs. Wear light colored clothing rather than dark. Long sleeve shirts, pants and shoes with socks offer some of the best protection against mosquito bites. Prevention around the home is about cutting off mosquitoes at the larval level. If they can't be born, they can't bite. And isn't it good to know what efforts are just a waste of time? That takes care of the humans and the house - but what about the barbecue tonight? To keep mosquitoes off the outdoor party guest list, pre-party preparations are in order. There are outdoor pesticides made especially for mosquitoes. Be sure to follow all of the safety instructions on the label. Concentrate your efforts where mosquitoes like to hang out: in pools of water; in cool, damp, shady areas. Keep in mind that pesticides will kill only the mosquitoes that are present when you spray. Pesticides lack the residual effects to kill mosquitoes that come by afterward. Some citronella candles may help deter new mosquitoes, provided the conditions aren't too windy. Still, it might also be a good idea to provide insect repellent for the invited guests.
