New Zealand milk may prevent cancer, scientist says

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

A U.S. scientist has found that the milk of New Zealand's cows might help in the fight to prevent cancer.

Milk from New Zealand's dairy farms can help prevent some cancers, according to a visiting US scientist. Dr Lance Baumgard, who visited Dexcel's Newstead campus last week, said milk had had some bad press over the years but was not "the bad boy" it was sometimes made out to be. Links with diseases like heart disease and cancer were simply not true and had now been disproved, he said. "The connection between dairy fat and coronary heart disease and cancer is simply not true. It is a back-door tactic used by animal rights groups to try and stop us eating animals and using animal products." The professor of animal and nutritional science at Arizona University instead described milk as "the perfect food". Dr Baumgard said Conjugated Linoleic Acid(CLA)m, a powerful anti- carcinogennic fatty acid, was present in all milk and was effective in the fight against breast, stomach and colon cancers. Trials had shown that quantities of CLA were three times as high in milk from pasture-fed cows overseas than those fed indoors. He was working with New Zealand scientists on why this was the case. There were also opportunities to increase the concentration of CLA by feeding cows more linseed and sunflower oils. He has worked on trials in this area with Dexcel scientists Norm Thomson and Jane Kay and believed CLA content in New Zealand milk could be doubled. Dr Baumgard is also working on the effect of using CLA to combat type 2 diabetes, Aids and muscle wasting in the elderly.
