U.K. hospitals harming patients, report states

More than 190,000 patients were harmed last year in U.K. hospitals due to negligence, a new report states.

The report by the National Health Service National's Patient Safety Agency said 31.4 percent of the 572,000 incidents caused by factors such as errors in drug prescription, inadequate training and missing or faulty equipment led to patient harm, the Daily Telegraph reported Friday. About 840 people died as a result of such incidents, but the report said that might be an underestimate. Previous research has suggested the number of deaths might be dramatically higher, the Telegraph said. "The great majority of NHS care is safe and effective with over a million patients successfully treated every day," said Richard Thomson, the NPSA's director of epidemiology and research. "However, it is inevitable in complex health care systems, treating often very sick patients, that sometimes things can and do go wrong," said Thomson. "When it goes wrong it is usually as a result of a problem in the system."
