U.S. to require low-energy air conditioners
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
The federal government has mandated that by 2006, all air conditioners must use less energy in an attempt to stall the impending energy crisis.
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER rating, measures energy efficiency -- the higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit.
The minimum SEER rating allowed sold today is 10, but models with SEER ratings of 12 or better are recommended.
The most efficient systems on the market are up to 70 percent more efficient than the current average.
"Emerson conducted a survey and found that 90 percent of U.S. adults had no concept of what SEER rating was," said TV do-it-yourself guru Dean Johnson, host of "Hometime" on PBS and in syndication.
"In fact, 90 percent of the people also didn't realize that these new standards were going into effect."
The new energy efficiency could save homeowners up to 40 percent on home cooling costs, according to Johnson.
"Talk to anybody and say "What do you get on your car?"
and they'll tell you just about exactly how many miles per gallon," Johnson said.
"Ask somebody how efficient their air conditioner is, and they'll just probably shrug their shoulders."
