As the computer expert for ajc.com, Bill Husted answers reader questions about PC care, and in his most recent article he covers the best ways to clean your computer's innards, the best kinds of internet service and other helpful tips.

When it comes to clearing dust away from the main circuit board of a computer, either will usually work just fine. I've known professional technicians who swear by compressed air and others who prefer a tiny vacuum. But in actual practice, I've had no problems with either. When using a vacuum, be careful to avoid letting the cleaning head bump into delicate components --- both because of the risk of a static electricity discharge and because you can jar something lose or break it. It takes a very powerful vacuum to do a good job when holding it a safe distance away from the motherboard. Q: I want to move away from dial-up Internet service and could use a little direction. I currently have digital cable television at home and BellSouth for telephone service and dial-up Internet. I understand cable Internet service is faster than DSL. Or should I go to satellite TV and get high-speed Internet service through DSL? (A disclaimer: The company that owns this newspaper has cable television holdings. That doesn't affect my opinion, but you need to know.) In your case, bundling the two services would probably be cheaper than the combined price of DSL and satellite TV. But I just spent a rainy weekend in that home and --- even during a light rain --- the Internet connection and TV signal were blocked for lengthy periods because of the rain. Q: I have some comments about (a) column where you advised against buying an extended warranty. I have found that extended warranties are practical for laptop computers. Our warranty for a $1,699 laptop is $240 for two years. I'm sure repairs would have been more than the price of the warranty.
