Journalist says podcasting is a fad that will soon fade away

In spite of the fact that podcasting is enjoying widespread popularity, Ziff Davis Publishing's David Coursey feels podcasting will not last, reports Podcasting News, and like personal web logs, a lack of audience will cause the medium to fade away.
Podcasting may be the hottest technology on the Internet right now, but not everyone is impressed by it.
"People experiment because content creation can be fun, sort of like finger-painting was back in preschool, but people also run out of creative energy, and the maintenance of a site, blog or Podcast becomes a chore," adds Coursey.
In a recent Publish article, Coursey says that the independent voices of podcasting will soon fade away, and states that "it is hard to be original and interesting over time, and major media outlets will be the big fish in this small pond."
Not only is Coursey skeptical about the longetivity of podcaster's interest, but he thinks that there won't be an audience for podcasts.
"I've been in the media all my professional life and have spent years trying to understand audience behavior.
I think many people such as yourself have been blinded into believing they know today's media because they have "been in the media all my professional life".
I am one of the biggest skeptics you will ever come across.
You can drive from one corner of the US to the other and get the same playlist on radio stations nationwide, and that does not even take Satelite Radio into consideration.
It's true that many podcasters will fade away as the energy required to maintain a show diminishes with time.
However, at the moment, the medium is dominated by people 'in the know', often with a technical background as opposed to a creative one.
This in itself brings a freshness to our ears that breaches the sanitised fare dished out by big media many listeners have tired of.
It is arrogant of those controlling mass media to think that because they have been the arbiters of taste until now that there is no talent worth talking about outside their borders.
Coursey notes: "And as a mass medium, Podcasting will be one of them."
