Duke University is building the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine, which will focus on "whole person healing" and offer health workshops, education and help with nutrition and fitness.
Nearly 100 Duke University faculty, staff and friends gathered to break ground Wednesday for what is set to be the future of medical care.
The site for the new Duke Center for Integrative Medicine was dedicated, marking the growth of Duke University Medical Center as well as advancement in the field of integrative medicine.
"This is a very proud day in the life of this university," said Duke President Richard Brodhead.
the idea of this is translated into reality."
The symbolic ceremony included comments from Brodhead; Victor Dzau, chancellor of health affairs and president and CEO of Duke University Health System; Ralph Snyderman, chancellor for health affairs, emeritus; philanthropist Christy Mack and Tracy Gaudet, director of the new center.
Each of the speakers dedicated the land by sharing their vision for the new facility.
They stood on a bridge representing integrative medicine with five pots of soil representing the multiple entities from which the idea for the facility was developed.
The 29,800-square-foot structure will include three main multipurpose rooms, a demonstration kitchen, dining facility, 14 therapeutic treatment rooms, lab space, meditation rooms, a small fitness center and office space.
Construction is expected to be completed June 1, with doors opening to the public on July 1.
The health and healing center will be built at the Duke Center for Living Campus off Erwin Road where DCIM is based.
"It feels fantastic to break ground," said Christy Mack, who is a Greensboro native.
"This environment will enable us to practice and experience new models of health care, incorporating all aspects of wellness," said Linda Smith, director of programs for the center.
Smith said that there is no other academic immersion program or facility like this in the country.
The facility will provide workshops, education, one-on-one interaction with physicians, as well as guidance in nutrition and fitness.
