Medical journal links obesity and cancer
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
A study in the New England Journal of Medicine reports many cancers -- like liver, pancreas, prostate, cervical, ovary and stomach cancers -- are linked to obesity, and according to American Cancer Society researchers, an estimated 90,000 cancer deaths a year may be the result of obesity-related cancers.
Smoking, pollution and overexposure to the sun are the usual suspects where cancer is concerned.
But a disturbing new report suggests 1-in-5 cancer deaths is linked to obesity.
The sad reality is that thousands of cancer deaths are caused by excessive weight gain and the death toll continues to rise.
The good news: you can substantially lower your risk -- and shrink your waistline at the same time -- by simply changing your ways and adopting a healthier lifestyle.
The most apparent example of obesity and cancer is in post menopausal women.
An overweight woman has twice the risk of developing cancer as a lean one.
Excessive weight has also been linked to cancers of the uterus, kidney, esophagus, gallbladder, breast, colon and rectum.
As if those findings aren't frightening enough, a recent study appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine states that many types of cancer that were not previously linked to obesity are, in fact, caused by expanding waistlines.
The first and hardest step is becoming aware of the seriousness of the disease.
The next step is educating ourselves and our children.
Once we are ready to face the reality of obesity -- then we will finally be ready to fight it.
The most important weapon in the war against weight and cancer is better nutrition.
Susan Burke, eDiets Vice President of Nutrition Services says, "Food in itself has properties that help protect against cancer.
Fruits and vegetables have high antioxidants that help fight off free radicals.
Free radicals are formed when weak bonds split.
They attack the nearest stable molecule and steal its electron.
Normally, the body can handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are unavailable major damage can occur."
