Because of high cost, some women are not seeking medical care

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

More than 25 percent of American women are not receiving adequate health care because of rising costs, reports FortWayne.com.

More than a quarter of American women are delaying or forgoing medical care because of costs, and one in seven say they're skipping doses of medicine or taking smaller doses to make their medicines last longer, according to a health report released last week. The Kaiser Family Foundation report "Women and Health Care: A National Profile" also noted that a majority of women rely on their doctors as primary sources of health information, but only half say they've discussed diet, exercise and nutrition with a doctor or nurse in the past three years. Alina Salganicoff, vice president and director of women's health policy at the Kaiser Foundation and an author of the study, says those findings might also be rooted in costs. "We don't really reimburse health care providers in our current system to provide this basic counseling," she says. But the survey found that women are also playing a big role in choosing their health care. Mayra Thompson, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, says the pressure of costs and lack of health insurance for many families is clearly a women's issue. One in four women reported having depression or anxiety diagnosed - more than twice the rate for men. One in 10 women between ages 18 and 44 said they have arthritis, hypertension, high cholesterol, asthma or another respiratory condition. Latinas are the least likely to have a regular doctor. Women who are Latina, low-income, single or young are particularly at risk for being uninsured. Women in poorer health are more likely to experience heavy stress from a range of health, economic and family issues including financial concerns, family members with poor health, and career challenges.
