Deformities found in Denmark's fish

A large number of deformed fish are being born in some of Denmark's fjords, according to environmental scientists.

Environmental officials in Denmark say a large number of deformed fish are being born in some of the country's fjords. Minister of the Environment Connie Hedegaard has ordered a study to determine what is causing the problem, the Copenhagen Post reported. A report by the National Environmental Research Institute said eelpout with two heads, bent backs or deformed eyes had been seen in several major fjords. The largest percentage of births of deformed fish appeared to be in Vejle Fjord in Jutland, where it was even higher near outlet pipes. "It's worrisome that we don't know what causes these deformities," said Hedegaard. "We suspect hazardous chemicals, but there are many theories about which specific chemicals could contribute to the deformities observed. There are also a number of possible sources of pollution, such as leftover pollution from shipping, agricultural pesticides, or runoff." The institute suggested hormone-like chemicals, heavy metals or dioxin could be to blame.
