Local scientists extract anti-cancer substance from brown seaweeds

Researchers at the Vietnam Science and Technology Institute have recently successfully extracted an anti-cancer substance, known as fucoidan, from brown seaweeds.
Research conducted on fucoidan biological activity since 2004 has shown that fucoidan can inhibit and kill liver and breast cancer cells in humans, said Bui Minh Ly, the director of the Material Sub-institute in central Nha Trang city.
In addition to fucoidan, there are other components of high-economic value in brown seaweeds, he said.
At present, the sub-institute has finalized the technology process for extracting fucoidan from a number of brown seaweeds species in Vietnam.
The sub-institute is expected to produce medicine from this component by 2007.
Vietnam has more than 120 species of brown seaweeds yielding more than 10,000 tons of dry seaweed per year, which are usually used as fertilizer.
Fucoidan has, over recent years, drawn chemists and pharmacists' attention as it can be used to make medicine for cancer, diabetes and other diseases.
It is thought that fucoidan can increase the human immune system, kill cancer cells, detoxify toxins and relieve pains and improve human health.
