Many with back pain turn to acupuncture
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Up to 90 percent of people will experience back pain sometime in their lives, and research suggests back pain is the most common reason people seek alternative medical treatments, especially acupuncture, to relieve the pain.
Back Pain Back pain can be caused by sudden twist or strain or sprain of the muscles or other supporting tissues in the back.
Sudden onset of acute back pain may be severe for a few days, but usually gradually improves.
It's more common in older people, those who spend considerable time lifting heavy objects, people who smoke or are obese, and patients with severe scoliosis (spinal curvature of more than 80 degrees).
Acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications may be helpful for reducing pain and inflammation.
In some cases, prescription medications are needed.
Some patients also get relief with heat or cold therapy, massage, ultrasound, electrical stimulation or chiropractic manipulation.
In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair orthopedic problems in the spine (like a spinal fracture or herniated disc).
Alternative Medicine for Back Pain: Acupuncture Research shows back pain is the most common reason people seek alternative medical treatments.
It's an ancient form of Chinese medicine based on the idea the body must maintain a balance of two opposing forces -- ying and yang.
Imbalance leads to a blockage of the flow of vital energy (called Qi), that travels through the body in pathways known as meridians.
To restore the flow of Qi, an acupuncturist places very thin needles at specific points along the meridians.
A 2002 National Health Interview Survey found 8.2 million American adults had received acupuncture treatment at least once.
In reviewing the studies, the researchers found acupuncture was strongly associated with short-term relief of back pain (up to six weeks).
The investigators say the effects may last longer, however the quality and quantity of current data isn't sufficient to back long-term benefits.
Patients with medical problems (like a herniated disc or spinal stenosis) may still need traditional medical intervention to fix the problem.
