Houston utility testing high-speed internet over power lines

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The new technology, called BPL, is allowing people to access high-speed internet through their own power lines, in an effort to compete with DSL and cable-modem broadband services.

UNDATED New technology being tested in several U-S cities allows people to connect to the Internet by plugging a computer modem into power outlets in their homes. The technology is called broadband-over-power line, or B-P-L. Advocates say it could compete with D-S-L or cable-modem broadband service. Officials say the experiment has been under way since June and will run through August. It's being tested in Houston, Texas and in Manassas Virginia -- where several hundred customers have signed up for B-P-L service offered by the municipal utility. The program is from CenterPoint and partner I-B-M Corporation. The technology could speed the sending of large files such as photographs contained in e-mail messages, because so-called upload speeds are generally faster than through D-S-L or cable modem. It could also allow the remote monitoring of security systems and thermostats.
