Strength training benefits all ages

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Dr. Miriam Nelson, an associate professor at Tufts University, recommends weight training for people of all ages, as it can help with depression and weight loss, and relieve arthritis pain and stress.

When you think about weight training you could assume it's an exercise for young people, but if you are a little older you may want to give it a go. Recent research suggests that strength training can provide remarkable benefits for people of all ages. Dr Miriam Nelson, an associate professor at Tufts University in the United States has written six books about health, she was recently in North East Victoria to present 'Strong mind, strong hearts' seminars on improving your health with age. Dr Nelson recommends that older people should establish an exercise routine that involves strengthening activities such as weight training, which can help with arthritis, stress relief, depression, weight loss and more. "What we outline is a program of two to three days a week of some strengthening exercises, which should consist of six types of exercises that take about half an hour to forty minutes. It's only a couple of times a week, so it's not a lot of activity and that coupled with an aerobic exercise such as going out for a brief walk, playing tennis and doing the things you like to do has the greatest impact on health". Dr Nelson says you are never too old to get started " Our oldest subjects have been in their late nineties and we continue to see quite a remarkable impact on improving health with these strengthening exercises ....and whatever age a person is, is the best time to get started".
