Annual naturopathic convention to be venue for diet discussion

Diet and nutrition as it relates to health and disease will top the list of topics at the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians' 20th annual convention in Phoenix, Ariz., August 24 to 27, according to NutraUSA.



More than one third of US adults use complementary and alternative medicine, according to a nationwide survey carried out as part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) 2002 National Health Interview Survey. Almost 20 per cent of these take natural products, such as herbs or other botanicals. The door is open -- are we prepared?' , Donese Worden will throw down the gauntlet to naturopaths attending the convention to seize on the opportunity of consumer demand for safe products to help alleviate inflammation. A session sponsored by POM Wonderful and led by Risa Shulman will update attendees on breakthrough findings in pomegranate research. Nigel Plummer will look at the use of novel probiotic organisms in the treatment of ASD and ADHD (sponsored by Seroyal USA). In the women's heath track, Cathy Carlson-Rink will present on prevention of pre-term labor, pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes with nutritional and herbal medicine. Paul Richard Saunders will speak on traditional botanical medicine for pregnancy and lactation. Dugald Seely will tackle the hot potato of potential interaction between complementary and alternative medicine and conventional therapies in his presentation 'Natural Health Products and Chemotherapy: Do they Mix? Dara Thompson will advocate an individualized approach to therapeutic diets, and Richard Maurer will offer advice on how to avoid long-term food elimination by addressing the underlying dietary irritants.
